Let them praise the name of the Lord: for His name alone is excellent; His glory is above the earth and Heaven. Psalm 148:13

In the Old Testament, a name was not only for identification, but for an identity as well. Many times a special meaning was attached to the name and an explanatory purpose for it. Take for instance Eve, the mother of all, Adam's wife. Did you know that wasn't her real name? When she and Adam fell into sin, Adam released her from being one with him and named her Eve. Her real name was Adam meaning "Mankind." In other words Adam and Eve were one, having one name!

The importance of the names of God are to reveal His nature and divine character so that we understand who He is and how He interacts with us, His children. God is not an "It" He is a person and it is imperative that we know Him intimately as we would know our own earthly father. God is our Jehovah Raah, the Lord our shepherd. God knows our name, shouldn't we know Him by His? Within the names of God we will see the "Divine attributes" of our heavenly Father and the all-sufficiency of His care for us.

God's name is holy and should never be spoken in vain, it is hallowed and should be regarded with complete Devotion and loving admiration. His holy name should be reserved for a position of grave significance in our minds and hearts. We should never take His name lightly, but always rejoice in it and think deeply upon its true meaning. In this Devotional teaching we will explore the meaning and significance of the names of God so that we can understand His true position as Most High, Father, Lord and Creator of all!

"Blessed be your glorious name, which is exalted above all blessing and praise! You alone are the Lord; You have made Heaven, the Heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth and everything on it, the seas and all that is in them, and You preserve them all. The host of Heaven worships You." Nehemiah 9:5,6
