The spirit doesn't get sick, but the flesh can weaken our resolve and draw us away from our relationship with God. When we are sick, the flesh can overwhelm our spirit so that we become lethargic in our spirit.
Galatians 5 tells us to walk in the Spirit, and we will not carry out the deeds of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh. This wears us down and drains our spiritual strength!
The apostle Paul spoke of a body of death relating to a punishment the Romans used, where they chained a corpse to a healthy person, and the decomposition of the dead body would eventually kill the healthy person it was chained to.
Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! Romans 7:24-25
