"Therefore, of these men who have accompanied us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, "beginning from the baptism of John to that day when He was taken up from us, one of these must become a witnesswith us of His resurrection." Acts 1:21,22

The disciples had a dilemma, they came up short having only eleven of them as the apostles of the Lord Jesus after the death of Judas who betrayed Him. The problem was twelve is the number of God's government, so they picked Matthias to be the twelfth.
Twelve is important because it is the foundational number of the universe, day and night are governed by 12 hours each, there are twelve months in the year and in Revelation 21:12-22 it reveals the measurements of the Holy Jerusalem descending from Heaven. Without twelve apostles there could be no foundation of the church of the Lord Jesus!
The apostles had the blueprint to the church of the New Testament because they saw the resurrection and the signs and wonders that validated the existence of the Messiah, the Lord Jesus Christ!
Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious, you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. I Peter2:4,5
