So David said to Nathan, "I have sinned against the Lord." And Nathan said to David, "The Lord has also put away your sin; you shall not die." II Samuel 12:13
David had committed two sins worthy of death, adultery and murder but God commuted his sentence of death and forgave him but told him of the consequences of his actions. David's life was about to change drastically, and the curses brought about by his sins would follow him to the grave!
God said that He would raise up adversity against David from his own house and would give his wives (concubines) to Absalom his son and he will lie with them in the sight of the sun! God told David what he did secretly, would be displayed before all Israel! Also, the child born to Bathsheba would die!
The consequences of David's sin brought death and destruction into his family beginning with his new-born son and then with others in his household and continued until his dying day!
"However, because by this deed you have given great occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme, the child also who is born to you shall surely die." I Samuel 12:14
