And lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I be exalted above measure. Concerning this thing, I pleaded with the Lord three times that it might depart from me. And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.”II Corinthians 12:7-9

The apostle Paul was afflicted by a demon, a cruel messenger of Satan as some versions state, because of pride. Now that is something that the original sin committed by Satan in Heaven, who was judged, is now being sent to Paul for the same thing!

God hates pride and arrogance, and He sends judgment against it as He did with Paul. The demons are the wrath of God, and they are sent to judge sinners. Paul was proud of his great number of Divine revelations, so he was buffeted (punched) by a demon to humble him.

Some think Paul's thorn was a disease of the eyes, but it really doesn't matter when you are afflicted by devils, thorns are thorns meant to bring judgment. God used this to strengthen Paul so that his weakness would make him strong!

Therefore, I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ's sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong. II Corinthians 12:10
