It's been a year since David's adulteress affair with Bathsheba and the murder of her husband Uriah and all seemed to be well. Newly married and parents of a baby boy it looked like David's sin was forgotten, hidden away in his heart and no one was the wiser, that is except God!
David was a man like us, although a man after God's own heart and a great military commander he was capable of breaking God's law and justifying his sins. David was guilty of two sins that carried the death sentence, adultery and murder, but he justified what he had done until God exposed his sins through Nathan the prophet.
Nathan went before Daivd and told a story about a man who had a guest over for the night but instead of taking a lamb from his flocks and herds, he took his servant's one little ewe lamb who was like a family pet and served it up. David flew into a rage and said, "As the Lord lives, the man who has done this shall surely die!" Nathan then said to him, "You are the man!" Convicted, David fell to his knees and began to confess and repent!
Why have you despised the commandment of the Lord, to do evil in His sight? You have killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword; you have taken his wife to be your wife and have killed him with the sword of the people of Ammon. II Samuel 12:9
