As we have seen in Deuteronomy where the modern day "Sinner's Prayer" was developed, it's not about praying a prayer but repenting and establishing a relationship with Jesus and making Him Lord of your life!
We don't hear much about being born again or becoming new creations today in our churches, only living your best life, prosperity and success! Jesus preached repentance and losing your life to gain eternal life! Remember He preached to thousands performing great signs and wonders, even raising the dead, but He only had a small band of followers willing to lose their lives to gain His life!
A rich boy came to Jesus asking what he must do to inherit eternal life and Jesus said, "Keep the commandments." The lad said he had kept them from his youth, (liar) no one has! Then Jesus said to him, "Sell all you have, give the proceeds to the poor and come follow Me!" The boy couldn't do it being very wealthy and went away sorrowful. I don't know of a preacher today who wouldn't have led the boy in a prayer and invited him into their church along with his wealth!
"If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. "For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it. "For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and is himself destroyed or lost?" Luke 9:23-25
