When they came to Marah, they could not drink the waters of Marah, for they were bitter. Therefore, the name of it was called Marah. And the people complained against Moses, saying, "What shall we drink?" Exodus 15:23,24

Moses brought Israel up from the Red Sea into the wilderness and they went three days and found no water. When they came to Marah they could not drink because the water was bitter.

Moses cried out to the Lord and He showed him a tree. When he cast it into the waters, the waters were made sweet. The tree Moses cast into the waters represented the cross of Jesus Christ whose blood washes bitterness away! Bitterness causes many afflictions, diseases, and maladies that torment the mind and inflict much pain on the body!

Marah is defined as bitter, and God wants us to deal with this sin lest others are defiled by it. Bitterness is the point of entry for many sins, such as hate, anger, resentment, unforgiveness, and in some cases left unchecked, murder!

Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord: looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up causing trouble, and by this, many become defiled. Hebrews 12:14,15
