Then Moses said, "Thus says the Lord: 'About midnight I will go out into the midst of Egypt; and all the firstborn of Egypt shall die, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sits on his throne, even to the firstborn of the female servant who is behind the handmill, and all the firstborn of the animals." Exodus 11:4,5
The Lord Himself went out into the night and death stalked and killed thousands of the firstborn of the Egyptians. Men, women, children, and livestock were struck down as the Death Angel moved through the land.
Egypt was in a shambles, their crops destroyed, their livestock dead, and the stench from the water turned to blood, the pestilence and the corpses arose like a deathly cloud over those who were still alive. It was one of the worst tragedies ever in the history of the world caused by the hardness of Pharaoh's heart!
It would have taken years to recover from such devastation without their labor force, livestock, crops and the loss of so many family members. It is surprising that Egypt survived at all, and it took all of this to loosen the bonds of Israel!
Then there shall be a great outcry throughout all the land of Egypt, such as was not like it before, nor shall be like it again. Exodus 11:6
