Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth! Psalm 46:10
A year and a half ago, my wife Mary Ann came down with a horrible pain in her stomach. We immediately went to the ER, where they ran a battery of tests, CT scans, and came up with a diagnosis of pancreatitis.
She stayed in the hospital for two days, and we went home. They didn't have much to say about what to do about it, other than diet and abstaining from fatty foods. The symptoms subsided for a while, but then came back with a vengeance. Every time she ate, she got sick, and it has progressively gotten worse.
For 45 years, I have prayed for the sick and have seen them healed and even the dead raised, but for my wife, to no avail. We have prayed in agreement, quoted the word, and taken communion, but nothing. Bound, loosed, and cast out, nothing! Discouraged and losing hope, we prayed for a word and then God spoke: "Be still and know that I am God."
The Hebrew word for "be still" is “raphah,” which means to let go, to stop, or to surrender. This isn't just about sitting quietly. It's about stopping the inner noise, the worry, and the need to control everything. In our fast-paced world, being still doesn’t come easy. We check our phones, make plans, and try to fix problems on our own. But God calls us to stop. To rest in Him. To let go.
“In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and in trust shall be your strength.” Isaiah 30:15
KNOW THAT I AM GOD
The second part of the verse is just as important: “know that I am God.” This means more than knowing about God. It means trusting who He is—His power, His presence, and His promises.
When we stop and recognize that God is in control, we shift our focus. We stop depending on ourselves and start relying on the One who holds the world in His hands.
“The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.” Exodus 14:14
If you are waiting on God, don't give up. Trust in His faithfulness and rest in the confidence that He will bring whatever you are praying for to pass; you only have to "Be Still!" Pray without ceasing, stand on His promises, and believe He loves you and wants the best for you!
But those who wait on the LORD shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. Isaiah 40:31
