The two things requested rule the world with lies and the lust for wealth! Many a good man, or even a Christian, has fallen prey to these two things. To trust God for your provision is Divine security from your heavenly Father.
Money is not the root of all evil, but it's very high on the list of things that can take you down! Nickels, noses, and numbers the preachers cry with a heart of selfish ambition and greed. I've seen it over and over: a preacher or pastor sees his little flock grow, and the money begins to roll in, and his heart turns him away from God.
When King David ordered a census of Israel and Judah, it was a moment of serious spiritual consequence. The act was prompted by either God’s anger (2 Samuel 24:1) or Satan’s incitement (1 Chronicles 21:1), and in both accounts, David’s motivation was seen as pride or self-reliance rather than trust in God. God was displeased with the census. Through the prophet Gad, David was given three punishments:
- Three years of famine
- Three months of fleeing from enemies
- Three days of plague
Or lest I be poor and steal and profane the name of my God. Proverbs 30:9
