Probably the most misunderstood gift of all the gifts is speaking in unknown tongues, although some are interpreted to the glory of God! After all the gift of tongues was the first to be manifested in the church and brought about a great harvest of souls!
One hundred twenty waiting on the "Promise" of the Holy Spirit to be poured out upon them when a mighty rushing wind came into the room where they were, and tongues of fire rested upon each one and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit! Thousands were in town for "Pentecost" when Peter began to preach the gospel out in the streets and the church was speaking in the tongues of different countries present and they heard the gospel in their own native tongue and 3000 were saved!
There are varieties of tongues all used to the glory of God by the leading of the Holy Spirit and not all require an interpreter such as our individual prayer language given for us to commune with the Father. This gift allows us to see in the Spirit more clearly and to know what the Holy Spirit is saying to us!
Therefore, brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak with tongues. Let all things be done decently and in order. I Corinthians 14:39,40
