And the woman conceived; so she sent and told David, and said, "I am with child." II Samuel 11:5
Being a brilliant military commander David knew exactly what he should do, he would send for her husband Uriah who was on the battlefield and convince him to spend the night at home with his wife Bathsheba and problem solved!
David told his commander in the field, Joab to send Uriah to him and when he arrived David asked how the war was progressing and then sent him to his home to be with his wife, but he greatly underestimated this Gentile warrior who was loyal to the cause and to David! Uriah slept outside the gate of the king's house so David had another idea, he would get him drunk and send him home but that didn't work either because he would not go home to his wife because Israel and the ark were dwelling in tents in the open fields.
It is amazing how one act of disobedience can turn into a full-blown crisis, from one night of bliss to the murder of one of David's men who was more honorable than he! David wrote out Uriah's death sentence telling Joab to send him into the heat of the battle and then pull back from him and David sent the Message by Uriah's own hand.
When the wife of Uriah heard that her husband was dead, she mourned for her husband. When her mourning was over, David sent and brought her to his house, and she became his wife and she bore him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased the Lord. I Samuel 11:26,27
