Now when they came to Marah, they could not drink the waters of Marah, for they were bitter. Therefore, the name of it was called Marah. Exodus 15:23
Their first test in the wilderness and you would think they would be ready for anything after they saw all the miraculous signs God had displayed before them! But they complained! Moses cried out to the Lord and the Lord showed him a tree and had him throw it into the bitter waters.
The tree represented the cross of Christ, a type and shadow of that which would come in the future when Jesus took our sins, sickness and bitterness to the crossand shed His blood for us! As soon as the tree was thrown into the waters of Marah, they were made sweet, and the people could drink.
Moses then made a statute and an ordinance for them and there he tested them. Then he spoke the word of God to them, a promise for them and for us today.
"If you will diligently heed the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in His sight, give ear to His commandments and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians. For I am the Lord who heals you." Exodus 15:26
