The Hebrew word racham (רָחַם) is closely related to rechem (רֶחֶם), which means "womb" in biblical Hebrew. This connection emphasizes that mercy is not merely pity or abstract compassion, but a visceral, protective, and life-giving care, akin to the instinctive love a mother has for her child in the womb (Deuteronomy 4:31; Lamentations 3:32). The plural form, rahamim (רַחֲמִים), is often used to describe God’s merciful nature and the ethical expectation for humans to act with compassion.
In the King James Bible, mercy is mentioned 276 times, and "His mercy endures forever" appears 26 times in Psalm 136 alone! So, God wants us to know how much He loves us and cares about us. In our men's group, we discussed God's multifaceted love for us like the facets of a diamond. As the above-mentioned definition states, God's mercy is likened to a mother's love for her child.
It is sometimes hard to imagine that God could love and care for us, who often believe that we are not worthy of His great love, but it is true, and as He says, "It endures forever!" So, clear your thoughts of unworthiness and open your heart to receive His love and rest in the fact that He is your heavenly Father, forever!
