I've been rich and I've been poor, rich is better, but it does have a tendency to rule your life and capture your heart. At 24 I inherited my dad's business and industrial lease property and although I was all of a sudden wealthy it didn't take long to squander it!
If I had kept my nose to the grindstone I could have made a success of my life, but I was enamored with sex, drugs, and rock and roll. It didn't take long before I became a hopeless drug addict with a two thousand dollar a week cocaine addiction and ended up cutting scrap metal next to my dad's business!
I have known millionaires who had it and lost it or died in the midst of obtaining more wealth instead of seeking the kingdom of God. It's like a dog chasing his tail, you never catch up to your desire for more! Jesus spoke a parable about a man who had many riches but wanted more so he built more barns to hold his goods and said to himself, "Soul you have many goods laid up for many years, take your ease, eat, drink, and be merry."
"But God said to him, 'Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then who's will those things be which you have provided?' "So is he who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God." Luke 12:20,21
