Commit your works to the Lord, and your thoughts will be established. Proverbs 16:3
I was watching a video of a man who took an old rock house and turned it into a beautiful home. The man was a craftsman, and when he saw the old house, he thought about what he would do to restore it.
Thoughts come first, and then comes the work, without which you will never bring the work to completion. So, it is with faith without works; it just remains a thought in your mind. We can talk about having faith, but until we use it, we will only have a thought.
Faith without works is dead, totally worthless, until we exercise it. Just as working out builds up our muscles, exercising our faith strengthens it, but without use, faith doesn't grow. We will never build up our faith unless we use it!
But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. but he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does. James 1:22-25
