For even if I made you sorry with my letter, I do not regret it, though I did regret it. For I perceive that the same epistle made you sorry, though only for a while. Now I rejoice, not that you were made sorry, but that your sorrow led to repentance. For you were made sorry in a godly manner, that you might suffer loss from us in nothing. II Corinthians 7:8,9

The word of God produces godly sorrow that leads to repentance, like a hammer when given under the anointing, it breaks the conscience open to receive the awareness of sin and iniquity. Like cracking an egg, the two-edged sword of God brings about repentance.
King David, a man after God's own heart, committed adultery with his neighbor's wife, Bathsheba, and devised a plan to have her husband, Uriah, murdered. Problem solved, Uriah dead, and after Bathsheba had mourned, David took her as his wife, making it look like it was a noble deed. Bathsheba gave birth to a child, and they were married, and everything was swept under the proverbial rug! No one but David's military commander knew, but God!
A year had passed, and life was good, but one night, Nathan the prophet met with the king and told him of a certain rich man who had a friend over and took his servant's only ewe lamb and served it up for his guest. David was furious and jumped up and said, "That man shall die!" Nathan said to him, "You are the man!" Godly sorrow gripped his heart, and he dropped to his knees in repentance!
For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death. II Corinthians 7:10
