I, the Preacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem. And I set my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all that is done under heaven; this burdensome task God has given to the sons of man, by which they may be exercised. I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and indeed, all is vanity and grasping for the wind. Ecclesiastes 1:12-14

I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and indeed, all is vanity and grasping for the wind. Ecclesiastes 1:12-14
King Solomon, son of David, exhorts us to understand that all that is done under the sun is vanity! Solomon was given great wisdom from God, and with it he created great wealth and property, and became one of the greatest kings in the history of the world.
Solomon said, "What profit has a man from all his labor, one generation passes away, and another generation comes!" My dad worked hard all of his life and built a multi-million-dollar business and accumulated property and wealth and died at 63! I inherited it all and squandered it on drugs and alcohol. Luckily, I sold out to my brother and the business was saved, but the point is, all a man has is gone when he dies and another receives it.
That is vanity! All that a man has when he dies is his soul, and nothing he has done or accumulated will go with him. Only what he did in Christ will survive the test of time when we stand before God, either at the Judgment Seat of Christ for believers or at the Great White Throne judgment for unbelievers!
I communed with my heart, saying, “Look, I have attained greatness, and have gained more wisdom than all who were before me in Jerusalem. My heart has understood great wisdom and knowledge.” And I set my heart to know wisdom and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also is grasping for the wind. For in much wisdom is much grief, and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow. Ecclesiastes 1:16-18
