Now behold, one came and said to Him, "Good Teacher what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?" Matthew 19:16

Jesus answered him, "Why do you call Me good? No one is good but God." But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments. The lad said, "Which ones?" Jesus quoted several commandments, and the boy said he had kept them. Really? No one else ever has!

The story of the "Rich Young Ruler" is typical of a lost person thinking he can be saved because he is a good person or by doing good works. Jesus brought about conviction by telling him no one is good and that he was a liar, no one has kept the commandments! For someone to be saved they must come to the end of themselves admitting they are helpless without Christ.

The kid still didn't get it when he asked Jesus what he was lacking and Jesus said to him, "Sell what you have and give to the poor and you will have treasure in Heaven, and come follow Me." The boy couldn't do it and went away sorrowful. Jesus didn't lead him in a prayer, but most pastors would, not wanting to lose a rich man they would welcome him into their church!

"Assuredly, I say to you that it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of Heaven. Matthew 19:23
