The apostle Paul was praying for Israel to be saved as they were trying to live by the law of Moses to attain righteousness and not by faith. We are saved by faith and not by works and Israel didn't understand, having lived under the law for eons.
Many today think that their good works can save them too, going to church, being baptized or giving to the poor, but only by believing by faith can one be born again! The Jews tried to distort Paul's message of salvation by faith alone by adding circumcision, but the apostle wouldn't have it, saying that if anyone preaches another gospel let him be accursed!
Even the famous "Sinner's Prayer", when prayed without faith, is only a worthless oath that produces no fruit because only a believing heart will save you! Have you believed? Are you born of the Spirit? If not, today can be the day of your salvation!
But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith which we preach): That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart, one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. Romans 10:8-10
