“Therefore, let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.” Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do? Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Acts 2:36-38

The key to salvation is conviction of sin. When the word cuts the heart it brings about a godly sorrow that must be confessed and repented of in order to bring about a transformation. Peter's Message convicted the crowd that they crucified the Lord, and guilt gripped their hearts!

The word is a two-edged sword that separates flesh from spirit and the sharp Message of the gospel cut the hearts of the people and 3000 were saved! Peter didn't lead them in a prayer, he told them to repent and turn away from their sins! This is missing today in our preaching of the gospel and has been replaced with a sugary little prayer that many think saves them.

Jonathan Edwards, an American revivalist preached a Message called, "Sinners in the hands of an angry God" in 1741. The convicting power of the gospel Message sent fear into the hearts of those who attended, and many grabbed the support beams because they were thought to be sliding into Hell!

Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. Then fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles. Acts 2:41-43
