Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. I Corinthians 13:1
Have you ever heard a child beating on a cymbal, it is a horrible sound but when one knows how to play on a fine Turkish brass Zildjian cymbal it can be beautiful! Being a drummer, I understand the difference.
So it is with someone speaking in tongues without the gift or saying, "I love you brother," when they don't even know you! I used to hate it when a pastor would say to the congregation, "Now turn to your neighbor and sing, 'I love you with the love of the Lord.' As if singing and mouthing the words of a song can produce love, it's almost as ridiculous as praying the sinner's prayer and not being convicted by the Holy Spirit!
True agape love comes from a heart washed in the blood of Jesus and is not an emotional experience as some think. The love of God is poured out upon us, the same love Jesus had for us when He died on the cross, it is a love unlike any of the fleshly human emotional feelings we have for one another. Agape love is a sacrificial love that does not reward our fleshly motives and selfish ambition.
And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing. I Corinthians 13:3
