The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and contrite heart, (feeling remorse affected by guilt) these, O God, You will not despise. Psalm 51:17

David was surely humbled to the point of his heart being broken because he grieved the Holy Spirit and sinned against his heavenly Father. When confronted by your sins and transgressions all justification fades away and you must see yourself as God does!

Psalm 51 contains the steps of a man's journey to confession and repentance from sin and leads him down the path to deliverance. David suffered much through the pain and agony of his guilt for murdering an innocent man and committing adultery with his wife! Because of his wicked behavior, although forgiven, the child Bathsheba bore died, and the consequences of his actions haunted he and his family to death!

We would do well to observe David's actions that led him to the valley of the shadow of death and destroyed his life!  The wages of sin always leads to death, spiritual death and eventually physical death! May God have mercy on us!

Therefore, submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double minded. Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up. James 4:7-10
