For I acknowledge my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. Against You, You only, have I sinned, and done this evil in Your sight that You may be found just when You speak, and blameless when You judge. Psalm 51:3,4

You may ask why I am writing about confessing sin and the transgressions of David when this is about God's promises. Because David was guilty and deserving of the death penalty but knowing the many promises of God, he knew God would forgive him.
It is important to know what God has for His children and how we can appropriate His many promises and benefits! When we sin, we must understand that the blood of His Son shed for us cleanses us from all unrighteousness! Even in the Old Testament there was forgiveness and mercy for God's people and David knew well what they were being a man after God's own heart!
When Nathan came before David with God's word he was convicted of his sins and knew if he cried out to God, He would surely forgive him of his transgressions, even murder and adultery because of His great mercy!
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. I John 1:9
