Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves that Jesus Christ is in you? Unless indeed you are disqualified. But I trust that you will know that we are not disqualified. II Corinthians 13:5

How do we examine ourselves to see if we are in the faith? Ask yourselves questions such as: "What is my attitude toward God? Do I acknowledge my dependence on Him and my accountability?"

Examine your heart by looking at the fruit of the Spirit or lack thereof in your life. We are known by our fruit; for instance, peach trees bear peaches, and believers bear the fruit of the Holy Spirit. Is there a time in your life when you surrendered your life to Jesus in faith?

The phrase "disqualified" in the Greek text of II Corinthians 13:5 refers to the act of self-examination to determine one's faithfulness to the believer's faith. The verse encourages believers to test themselves to see if they are truly in the faith and if Jesus Christ is in them.

Now I pray to God that you do no evil, not that we should appear approved, but that you should do what is honorable, though we may seem disqualified. For we can do nothing against the truth, but for the truth. For we are glad when we are weak, and you are strong. And this also we pray, that you may be made complete. II Corinthians 13:7-9
