One of my favorite authors was the late Phillip Keller, who wrote, "A Shepherd Looks at the 23rd Psalm." In his early years, he was a sheepman in South Africa and had beautiful, lush pastures for his sheep.
His neighbor next to him had dry dusty fields with little vegetation for his flocks, and his sheep would be at the fence longing for Phillips' green pasture! This is an illustration of our Shepherd's care of us, the sheep of His pasture. He feeds us with the Word of the living God and gives us drink from the waters of life. The goats of the world, on the other hand, are hungry and thirsty, living in poverty for lack of a Shepherd.
Jesus, the great Shepherd, gives us, His sheep on His right, everything that pertains to life and godliness, but the goats on His left receive nothing but heartache and lack perishing without a Savior! Instead of fear, Jesus prepares a table in the presence of our enemies and anoints us as His royal priesthood; our cups are always full!
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Psalm 23:5-6
