This scripture reminds me of a rich boy who asked the Lord about eternal life and said to Him, "Good Master what do I have to do to inherit eternal life and the Lord said to him, 'No one is good but God!' " So, the steps of a born-again man are ordered by the Lord because that is the way of eternal life to be led by the Lord!
Goodness only comes from a transformation brought about by the cleansing of the blood of the Lord Jesus! Many claim to be good but are not, having a form of self-righteousness that leads to Hell! God has a desire to see all men saved, but not all surrender to His call, only the New Creation will receive the promises of God that leads to life and the rest go to their grave in despair never knowing the blessings and favor of God!
Nickodems was a very good man and a teacher of the scripture being a Pharisee claiming to be a man of God, but Jesus told him that he must be born again to inherit eternal life! Sadly, there are millions claiming to know the Lord Jesus, good upstanding church goers, graduates of seminaries, and faithful to attend Sunday School, but they are lost as a goose in a snowstorm!
"Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the Kingdom of God." That which is born of the flesh is flesh, (human) and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit." (supernatural) John 3:5,6
