It is the glory of God to conceal a matter, but the glory of kings is to search out a matter. As the heavens for height and the earth for depth, so the heart of kings is unsearchable. Take away the dross from silver, and it will go to the silversmith for jewelry. Take away the wicked from before the king, and his throne will be established in righteousness. Do not exalt yourself in the presence of the king, and do not stand in the place of the great; for it is better that he say to you, "Come up here," than that you should be put lower in the presence of the prince, whom your eyes have seen. James 4:10 is part of a passage in the Epistle of James that addresses the dangers of selfish ambition and the need for humility. The surrounding verses (James 4:1–10) warn against covetousness, pride, and the desire to be exalted above others. Instead, James calls believers to humble themselves before God, recognizing their dependence on Him and their need for His grace.
The phrase "in the sight of the Lord" emphasizes that humility is not just a personal attitude but a posture of reverence and submission before God. It reflects the idea that true humility is acknowledging one’s worthlessness in comparison to God’s holiness and power. Today in the churches and the religious world, humility is a foreign thing to many of the Superstar preachers and pastors!
