A certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession. And he kept back part of the proceeds, his wife also being aware of it, and brought a certain part and laid it at the apostle's feet. But Peter said, "Ananias why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the piece of the land for yourself?" Acts 5:1-3

The new church was selling their lands and possessions to meet the demands of over 3000 coming to the Lord and bringing their families into Jerusalem, and they brought the proceeds and laid them at the apostle's feet.
Ananias and his wife had conspired against the Holy Spirit to keep part of the proceeds and God revealed to Peter what they had done. Peter confronted Ananias about their scheme saying that while the land remained in their possession it was theirs to do what they wished, but they lied and pretended to give all the proceeds and secretly kept back some of it for themselves.
When Ananias heard these words, he dropped dead, and the young men came in and buried him. Later his wife came in and Peter confronted her saying why have you agreed together to test the Spirit of the Lord? Then immediately she fell down at his feet and breathed her last and they took her out and buried her next to her husband.
So great fear came upon all the church and upon all who heard these things. And through the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders were done among the people. Acts 5:11,12
