Israel got their king, a dismal choice indeed, Saul's kingship didn't last long until he disobeyed God, and the kingdom was torn from him and given to a man after God's own heart.
Samuel delivered a Message from the Lord for Saul to destroy the Amalekites for what they had done to Israel. Saul was told to utterly destroy all they have and do not spare them, kill both man and woman, infant and nursing child and all their livestock. Saul disobeyed and took Agag, king of the Amalekites and the best of the spoils, and God regretted that He had set up Saul as king.
Saul was confronted by Samuel over his failure to destroy the Amalekites and he tried to ask for forgiveness but to no avail, he had disobeyed the commandment of the Lord and failed to fulfill his mission.
Samuel said to Saul, "The kingdom of Israel has been torn from you today, and has been given to a neighbor of yours, who is better than you." I Samuel 15:28
