Therefore, thus says the Lord GOD: “Behold, I lay in Zion a stone for a foundation, a tried stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation; whoever believes will not act hastily. Also, I will make justice the measuring line, and righteousness the plummet; the hail will sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters will overflow the hiding place. Your covenant with death will be annulled, and your agreement with Sheol will not stand; when the overflowing scourge passes through, then you will be trampled down by it.  Isaiah 28:16-18

In the Bible, “Cornerstone” is a powerful metaphor for the essential, unshakable foundation upon which God’s plans, structures, and people are built. In ancient construction, the cornerstone was the first and most important stone laid at the corner of a building, setting the alignment and stability for the entire structure. If it was flawed or misaligned, the whole building would be compromised!

Indispensable and irreplaceable: Like the physical cornerstone, Jesus is the non-negotiable foundation for God’s kingdom and for individual salvation.
Guiding standard: Just as the cornerstone set the measurements for the building, Christ is the standard for doctrine, life, and worship.
Unity and stability: The cornerstone metaphor shows how Christ unites believers into one body, the Church, and provides spiritual stability.
Rejection and vindication: The image also reflects that Jesus was initially rejected by religious leaders but ultimately exalted by God, becoming the sure foundation for all who trust in Him.

In summary: In the Bible, the cornerstone symbolizes Jesus Christ as the essential, unshakable foundation of God’s work—both in the physical and spiritual realms. It conveys His necessity, permanence, and the promise that those who build on Him will stand firm.

Therefore, it is also contained in the Scripture, “Behold, I lay in Zion A chief cornerstone, elect, precious, and he who believes on Him will by no means be put to shame.” Therefore, to you who believe, He is precious; but to those who are disobedient, “The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone,” and “A stone of stumbling and a rock of offense.” They stumble, being disobedient to the word, to which they also were appointed. I Peter 2:6-8
