A man who has friends must himself be friendly, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. Proverbs 18:24
What a friend we have in Jesus, as the song states. It is good to have close friends, but Jesus must be our best friend. I've been blessed to have many friends in my life, but early on in ministry, dealing with those we were trying to help, many turned against us!
There is an old saying, "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer!" Truer words were never spoken. In ministry to drug addicts, prostitutes, and the incarcerated, you have to stay close to the Lord Jesus. In my first attempt at residential ministry, I opened a mission and appointed a man whom I had helped, along with his wife, to oversee it.
Every time I entered the mission, people were obviously scared of me, and it turned out that my overseer had convinced them I was sacrificing chickens in the backyard, while he was pimping his wife out across the highway! Needless to say, my first attempt was a disaster; lessons learned!
Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor.
For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls, for he has no one to help him up. Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm; but how can one be warm alone? Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him. And a threefold cord is not quickly broken. Ecclesiastes 4:9-12
