Have mercy upon me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness; according to the multitude of Your tender mercies, blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. Psalm 51:1,2
David committed adultery with his neighbor's wife and then had her husband killed in battle. Thinking the ordeal was swept under the proverbial carpet, the prophet Nathan confronted him after telling him a story about a rich man who took his servant's ewe lamb and served it up for a guest.
Enraged, David cried out, "This man shall die!" Nathan then said to him, "You are the man!" Convicted, David fell to his knees and began to confess and repent of his sins, which held a death sentence for them both! God forgave him but the consequences of his sins followed him to the grave!
Psalm 51 gives us the steps to deliverance from our sins and transgressions. God loves us and is quick to forgive, even murder and adultery if we are honest and truly sorry for our actions. Unconfessed sin gives ground to our enemies to oppress us and opens doors to torment and bring on us sickness, disease and infirmity if we don't repent!
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. I John 1:9
