But what does it say? "The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart" (that is the word of faith which we preach;) that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:8,9

Good question, what does it say? Since we are dealing with the most important question ever, we need to know the correct answer. The above-mentioned scripture birthed what is commonly called "The Sinner's Prayer" which originated from Deuteronomy 30:14 and is a covenant oath!
Our salvation is the most important decision we can ever make in this life that we may inherit eternal life to come! First of all, the scripture, "if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus," or Jesus as Lord, the fact of the matter is you can't confess that Jesus is your Lord unless He is! There have been millions pray the "Sinner's Prayer" saying they believe and confess Him as Lord and then turn away and follow all their other gods.
Praying prayers, getting baptized, taking communion, or joining the church doesn't save you! Remember the thief on the cross, he was convicted by the Holy Spirit that he was a sinner and he asked Jesus to remember him when He comes into His kingdom, acknowledging Him as Lord and King. No prayer, no baptism, just belief!
"If your heart turns away so that you do not hear, and are drawn away, and worship other gods and serve them. "I announce to you today that you shall surely perish; you shall not prolong your days in the land. "I call heaven and earth to witness today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore, choose life, that both you and your descendants may live." Deuteronomy 30:17-19
