Jezebel and Ahab had polluted the people's minds and their false prophets turned Israel away from following God. Elijah challenged the people to choose who they would serve, Baal or God!
Elijah told them to build and altar to sacrifice to their god and he would do the same and call upon God and the god who answers by fire is God. And so the prophets of Baal built their altar and sacrificed their bull and cried out to their god from morning until noon and Elijah mocked them saying, "Maybe their god is meditating, or busy or maybe he is asleep, but no answer.
What a scene, 800 prophets of Baal calling out to a false god who never answered, and Elijah was about to build his altar, a type and shadow of the church of Jesus Christ with twelve stones representing the twelve apostles of Christ!
So they cried aloud, and cut themselves, as was their custom with knives and lances until the blood gushed out of them. And when midday was past, they prophesied until the time of the evening sacrifice. But there was no voice, no one answered, no one paid attention. I Kings 18:28,29
