For I acknowledge my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. Against You, You only, have I sinned, and done this evil in Your sight, that You may be found just when You speak, and blameless when You judge. Psalm 51:3,4

David acknowledged his sins, something many don't do because of pride or shame but it is necessary for one to achieve repentance! The prisons as well as Hell are full of people who would not get honest about their sin and confess but would rather suffer the consequences than be set free!

To be sorry you got caught in your sin is not enough because one needs to have Godly sorrow that he grieved the Holy Spirit. David was convicted in his heart that he was indeed guilty and worthy of death because of his grievous sins of adultery and murder. Someone who is a person after God's own heart will be quick to confess and repent once convicted of his sin!

Many today in the church are lost because they prayed a prayer, walked an aisle or were baptized but never truly admitted they were sinners worthy of eternal damnation, instead believing they were good, and their goodness would save them! This is the first step to receive eternal life in Christ, to confess you have sinned against a holy God. It was a year before David was convicted of his sins and confronted by Nathan because he justified what he had done.

Now I rejoice, not that you were made sorry, but that your sorrow led to repentance. For you were made sorry in a godly manner, that you might suffer loss from us in nothing. For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted, but the sorrow of the world produces death. II Corinthians 7:9,10
