Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified. Galatians 2:16

Peter had come to Antioch, and Paul withstood him to his face because he would eat with the Gentiles, but when James and other Jews came, he would separate himself and not eat with them. Paul called him a hypocrite!

The gospel simply states that we are justified (pardoned) by faith and not by keeping the law. When the Jews observed the freedom of the Gentiles having received the grace of God, they would try to bring them back under the law by being circumcised or to abstain from certain foods, but Paul wouldn't have it!

We are saved by grace through faith plus nothing, not by works or being good; it is the gift of God! This is what Paul meant in Galatians 1:6-9 when he said that if anyone would pervert the gospel, let him be accursed!

For through the law I died to the law that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. Galatians 2:19-21
