"There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously (luxury) every day. "But there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, full of sores who was laid at his gate, "desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table. Moreover, the dogs came and licked his sores." Luke 16:19-21

I remember years ago at church a boy rode up on a bicycle and everything he said was either a testimony of God's faithfulness or he was praising God. There was also an old man who would get up while our pastor was preaching quoting scripture and praising God, both drove the pastor nuts and many of the congregation!

This scripture reminds me of many of the churches that are irritated by the poor and downtrodden not wanting them to defile their buildings or the carpet. I admit from years of ministering to street folks, drug addicts, prostitutes, and the poor they are a lot of trouble, and many don't want help just a handout to buy drugs or alcohol, but we are called to reach out to them.

Poor old Lazarus just wanted a little bread, but the rich man wouldn't give him anything. The beggar died and was carried to Abraham's bosom and the rich man died and went to Hades. In torment he cried out to Abraham for mercy and for Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water to cool off his tongue for he was tormented in the flames.

"But Abraham said, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted, and you are tormented.' " Luke 16:25
