When all the people were baptized; it came to pass that Jesus also was baptized; and while He prayed, the heaven was opened. And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from Heaven which said, "You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased." Luke 3:21,22
Jesus was to begin His ministry and as He was baptized by John in water the Holy Spirit baptized Him in the Spirit and His Heavenly Father spoke to Him in an audible voice. This is the model we as believers should expect when we are born again! Our baptism is our death, burial, and resurrection: death to sin and our old man buried and resurrected into a New Creation in Christ.
Equipped for service Jesus would be led by the Spirit into the wilderness to fast and seek the Lord for direction in ministry and to be tested by the devil. All of us will be tested as we walk this journey with Jesus, and we should be equipped to be able to withstand the trial! The first attack Jesus endured was about His identity, who He was, and it will surely be one of ours!
Tired, hungry, and thirsty, Jesus was approached by the devil who tempted Him with this: "If You are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread!" Jesus answered and said, "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.' " If? Was there any doubt? No none, but will you be able to pass the test?
Be sober, be vigilant, because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world. I Peter 5:8,9
