And those who are Christ's have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Galatians 5:24
I would venture to say that everyone who belongs to Christ is struggling to put to death their flesh and to be crucified with Him! We as believers all experience our death, burial and subsequent resurrection when we are baptized, so when you surfaced from your watery grave were you free from your passions and desires?
So, why crucifixion, why not put a spiritual gun to your head and pull the trigger, figuratively speaking and "Bam!" you are set free? Well, it doesn't work that way because crucifixion takes time, and it is a slow and painful death. Jesus gave up His life in one day and the two thieves were killed because of the Sabbath, but our death will take much longer!
"I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live but Christ lives in me" can be quoted till you are blue in the face but your flesh is still alive! So, how in the world do we kill this thing? By suffering in the flesh which comes about when we confess our sin and repent. Repentance causes us to suffer when we deny our passions and desires, like quitting smoking to those who have there is great suffering until at last you are freed from its addictive hold!
Therefore, since Christ suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same mind, for he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin. I Peter 4:1
