Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts but especially that you may prophesy. I Corinthians 14:1
Zacharias the father of John the Baptist was one of the first to prophesy in the New Testament and then John who foretold of the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ! Although there were many prophets in the Old Testament everyone was allowed to use the gift and encouraged to do so in the New Testament!
Although the gift of prophecy is available to all that doesn't make them prophets. The prophet speaks that which he is given to speak from God! Prophecy is important for the church to know and be led in the right direction by the Holy Spirit. Today most of the prophecy given is just mush, full of warm fluffy promises of prosperity with no rebuke or indignation for sin! This is why the modern-day church is not holy nor are sinners converted to Christ!
Jonathan Edwards, a fiery young minister preached a sermon called "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" in the 1730's that sparked a great revival! I encourage you to look it up and read it to see what a Message of God can accomplish in the life of a sinner!
If anyone thinks himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things which I write to you are the commandments of the Lord. I Corinthians 14:37
