Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it. And everyone who competes for the prize is temperate (exercises self-control) in all things. Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for an imperishable crown. I Corinthians 9:24,25

The Incorruptible Crown commonly known as The Victor's Crown is given to those who win the race of eternal life! In order to excel in sports everyone knows they have to have endurance and discipline so that they can win the race! So it is in the race for eternal life one must discipline himself for the journey, not that works will win salvation, but to persevere in the race for the reward!
I wish I could tell you I was disciplined as a kid in sports, but I wasn't, I smoked and drank and hardly ever worked out and I even quit football my sophomore year so that I could go to the lake and party! One time I was caught smoking over at my next-door neighbor's house by his fatherwho smelled the smoke. Now my neighbor didn't smoke but it was me who did and so we lied to his father. To find out who was lying the dad had us run a race and the winner obviously wasn't smoking, but I won because I was fastest although undisciplined!
When I came to the Lord, being born-again, my undisciplined life changed, and I became diligent to study and journal God's word. As a new creation in Christ old things passed away and all things became new, a new man in the race and destined to win the crown, my focus was on the prize!
Therefore, I run thus: not with uncertainty. Thus I fight: not as one who beats the air. But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified. I Corinthians 9:26,27
