Levi or Matthew as he is called was a tax collector, hated by the Jews. It is not known if he had two names as many Jewish men did or possibly he was named by Jesus being a sign of transformation like Peter and Paul.
Matthew was the first to write down the accounts of Jesus and His Teachings in the Hebrew language being literate, although hated because of his job as a tax collector he was chosen to be a disciple of the Lord, proving the gospel can change anyone! These testimonies of the twelve show the power of the gospel Message to transform men from violent aggressors and hardened sinners into saints of the Most High!
Matthew was a missionary and preacher who laid down his very life for the gospel and died a martyr. His writings are still reverberating around the world as does the rest of God's word being the greatest best seller of all time!
Now it happened, as He was dining at Levi's house, that many tax collectors and sinners also sat together with Jesus and His disciples; for there were many, and they followed Him. Mark 2:15
