And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord had come, saying, "Israel shall be your name." I Kings 18:31

Elijah, a type and shadow of the Lord Jesus Christ was building an altar to hold the sacrifice and subsequent fire from Heaven about to fall upon it as he challenged the false prophets. The altar, also a type and shadow of the church of the future was made of twelve stones, representing the government of God and a prophetic view of the twelve living stones, the disciples of Christ yet to come!

Jesus Christ appeared upon the earth to build a human altar of living stones to contain the fire of Holy Spirit's presence and to spread His gospel around the world to save and deliver the lost. He chose twelve average untrained and uneducated Jewish boys and called them out of their livelihood to follow Him in obedience as His disciples, soon to become master-builders as apostles of Christ!

Within this Devotional teaching I will attempt to give a glimpse of revelation into the lives of the twelve men chosen as the foundation of New Testament Christianity and show you a model for the church of Jesus Christ to follow. These men's lives are not a history lesson from antiquity, but examples for us as believers to pattern our lives after!

Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious, you also as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. I Peter 2:4,5
