"Now therefore, send and gather all Israel to me on Mount Carmel, the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal, and the four hundred prophets of Asherah, (Canaanite goddess) who eat at Jezebel's table." I Kings 18:19

Elijah confronted the false prophets of Baal and Asherah and challenged them to build an altar to their god and he would also build one and the god who answered by fire would be God! And so it was, they took their bull and made a sacrifice and cried out to their god, but no answer.

Now this is the prophetic overview of the church of God in the future when Elijah repaired the altar of the Lord with twelve stones, representing the twelve tribes of Israel and the twelve apostles of the Lamb! He then dug a trench around the altar, laid the wood in place and cut the bull in pieces and then did something very strange! He had twelve waterpots of water poured out on the sacrifice that represented Israel's baptism of purification.

The sacrifice was prepared and laid on the altar of God and Elijah called upon the Lord to send fire from Heaven and so it was that the fire of God fell and consumed the sacrifice, the wood and licked up the water in the trench and the people fell on their faces and cried out, "The Lord, He is God!" Now, remember Jesus was our sacrifice and the assembly at Pentecost was His church and fire fell from Heaven and filled His people with the Holy Spirit and so it is up until this very day!

"And I will build My church and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it." Matthew 16:18
