"But the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, who believe for a while and in a time of temptation (testing) fall away." Luke 8:13

It is impossible to grow anything sown on concrete and as with the heart of man it is also impossible for one to be saved without conviction of sin and a heart capable of receiving the seed of God's word.

Millions have walked isles, prayed prayers and seemingly received Jesus in evangelistic rallies and church services, many of them counted as one would count the notches on his gun, but soon after their experience they fall away, never to be seen again. Their hearts were hard and they were not rooted and grounded in the Word, instead their eyes were always on the world and when tempted or some trial entered their life they fell away.

One of the reasons for man's heart to remain hard is the fact that modern day preaching doesn't break up the soil of the heart to prepare it for planting seed. From John the baptist, to Jesus, the disciples, all the way down to the apostle Paul, they all preached that men should repent of their sins and be saved from damnation. The two edged sword of God's word to plow the ground and the rain of Holy Spirit conviction, together prepare the heart to receive salvation.

Sow for yourselves righteousness; reap mercy; break up your fallow ground, for it is time to seek the Lord, till He comes and rains righteousness on you. Hosea 10:12
