Yahweh is the promised name of God, the name Israel could not mention because of His holiness and is actually spelled YHWH without vowels. Yahweh is mentioned 6519 times in the Old Testament, but in the third century AD the Jewish people stopped saying His name for fear they would take it in vain!
The name Yahweh distinguishes God's name from all the other gods worshiped on the planet. Even Satan is called a god, as are many others, such as those of the Eastern religions. Could it be that we are actually taking His name in vain by not calling Him YHWH? Some theologians think so. I believe we would do well to call Him Father because that is what He is to those who have been born again.
Jesus addressed Him as Father and instructed us to pray in this manner: "Our Father in Heaven, hallowed (revered, sanctified and holy) be Your name." Even now His name is Holy and we should have the same respect and adoration as the children of Israel had when we worship Him or pray to Him as our heavenly Father.
For from the rising of the sun, even to its going down, My name shall be great among the Gentiles; In every place incense shall be offered to My name, and a pure offering; for My name shall be great among the nations, says the Lord of Hosts. Malachi 1:11
