Then I set my face toward the Lord God (Adonai) to make request by prayer and supplications, with fasting, sackcloth and ashes. And I prayed to the Lord my God, and made confession, and said, "O Lord, great and awesome God, who keeps His covenant and mercy with those who love Him, and with those who keep His commandments." Daniel 9:3,4

Adonai means Lord and Master and is used 434 in the Old Testament, the verbal parallel to Yahweh and Jehovah. Yahweh is the promised name of God, too holy for the Jewish people to voice. Just the mention of God's holy name brought about fear and trembling.

As we see the definitions and uses of the names of God we see the pure and transparent holiness of God and why the worship of His mighty name in the Old Testament was so intense and exhilarating for His people! I am afraid we have lost our respect and our knowledge of His divine character today in our praise and worship, embellished with smoke and darkness, accompanied with rock music.

Today as New Creations in Christ we see the true nature of the living God in His Son who stepped out in the flesh to give us a visual of God the Father. Jesus exudes the true nature and character of His Father, His wrath satisfied by the death, burial and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ, He is our Adonai, Lord and Master.

"You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. "If I then, your Lord and teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. "For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. "Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his Master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. "If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them." John 13:13-17
