But what does it say? "The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart (that is the word of faith which we preach); that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus (Jesus as Lord) and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved." For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation. Romans 10:8-10

This scripture was taken from Deuteronomy 30:11-20 and is an oath of loyalty and Lordship. It was the same scripture Jesus gave me in a graveyard years ago, exhorting me to make Him Lord and forsake the world!

The "Sinner's Prayer" was also derived from the above-referenced scripture which has become a deceptive tool in the church at times when one is taught to believe that by muttering a little prayer he is somehow transformed into a new creation in Christ! Remember there are two components necessary for salvation, conviction by the Holy Spirit and confession of sins!

When confronted by the "Rich Young Ruler" about salvation, Jesus told the lad that goodness and keeping the commandments couldn't get him there. He didn't lead him in a prayer as many preachers would have done, but He told him to sell all his possessions that held his heart and follow Him, something he wasn't willing to do.

I call Heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore, choose life, (eternal) that both you and your descendants may live. Deuteronomy 30:19
